Why did you choose graduate school at IU Indianapolis?
I was looking for a program that balanced high impact research productivity with excellent clinical training, and IU Indianapolis seemed to be one of the best options! The academic environment is supportive and passionate, and I feel that my research interests are a great match with my mentor’s, Dr. Melissa Cyders. Everyone in the department is excited and invested in the work we all are doing, and I appreciate that the community is not competitive. The faculty and staff seem to really care about my progress and success.
What has been your favorite academic accomplishment since you’ve been here?
I’ve really enjoyed all my courses so far and have gained many valuable skills. One project I particularly enjoyed and benefitted from was an assignment to select an evidence-based clinical treatment program and teach the rest of the class how to conduct the treatment.
What do you enjoy most about life in Indianapolis?
There’s so much to do in the city! I really enjoy the museums, many of which have free or discounted student memberships, and the live music concert series at various venues around town. There are also so many great coffee shops, bookstores, and music stores to check out.
Please provide some details about your work/research as a graduate student and/or any activities you are involved in.
I work on one of my lab’s longitudinal studies, following up with participants to collect their survey data and make sure they receive compensation. I am currently working on my thesis which will be investigating the moderating effect of sex/gender on the relationship between stress and brain activity associated with alcohol seeking behaviors. I volunteer with Project SHORT to mentor graduate school applicants, and next fall I will be joining my department’s Graduate Student Diversity Committee. In my free time, I also play in recreational softball and euchre leagues.
