Master's students in Purdue Computer Science at IU Indianapolis will remain with IU Indy and will need to elect to receive a Purdue diploma or change to the new Computer Science Master's within Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
Computational Data Science master's students under Computer Science will move to the Department of Mathematical Sciences and will need to elect receiving a Purdue diploma from IU Indy or moving into the IU Computational Data Science degree in the IU Department of Mathematical Sciences.
All students enrolled in Purdue programs under the School of Science on 5/1/2024 must complete a Declaration of Intent (DOI) online survey which will be provided in an email in early April and will give the student the opportunity to select IU or Purdue for each degree they are seeking. Students planning to graduate in Spring or Summer 2024 must still complete a form but will be awarded the Purdue degree regardless of the selection they make.
We are recommending students submit the Declaration of Intent by July 1, 2024 to allow time for each institution to review and record student decisions well in advance of fall 2024.
The declaration is a binding agreement which students must sign. Students have only one opportunity to submit this document.
The survey will require Duo login for security, and will automatically document the student’s IU Indianapolis username and ID number. Students will have to enter their Purdue ID number, their Purdue email address and a contact phone number.
The Graduate School will follow up with students who have not submitted.
Students graduating in Spring or Summer 2024 must still complete a form but will only be awarded the Purdue degree prior to Fall 2024. If, for some reason, they need to defer their graduation to Fall 2024 or after (which may not be apparent until after the DOI survey deadline), students should make the degree selection - IU or Purdue - that they would want for a later completion if that becomes necessary.
No, students in Purdue programs in the School of Science that are changing to IU Indianapolis School of Science will not become Purdue in Indianapolis students if they elect to continue with their Purdue degree.Students will be enrolled in a Purdue degree program on the IU Indianapolis campus.
Purdue diplomas from IU Indianapolis will say
...In recognition of the fulfillment of the requirements of that degree ‘awarded for study at Indianapolis’.
This will apply to all of the teach out diplomas as well as any diploma reprint requests for alumni.
Students choosing to move to their same degree under IU will not have a time limit to complete their degree. However, resources will be made available to ensure students complete in a timely manner.
Students choosing to receive a Purdue degree will need to complete their program by May 2027. Students who are not on track to finish by Spring 2027 will need to request permission to continue from the Purdue Graduate School.
The choice elected in the Declaration of Intent survey is binding, but submissions sent in error can be reset one time with an immediate email to pugrad@iu.edu. Clearance of the submission will only occur during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm) to allow a student to resubmit a valid survey.
Students who wish to change their degree institution after submitting a survey will need to apply to the other institution for regular admission; they will need to work with the new institution for allowance to use prior courses, exams, etc.; and they will need to meet the degree requirements as a new admission for Fall 2024 or after. Keep in mind for students interested in a Purdue degree, the IU Indianapolis School of Science will no longer enroll new students under Purdue University as of July 2024. Thus, students failing to complete the declaration would need to apply to another Purdue campus if their goal is to graduate from Purdue University. For students interested in an IU degree, new School of Science applicants in fall 2024 will face different program requirements but can apply to IU Indianapolis.
There is no requirement that both degrees be the same choice, but students should keep in mind that the requirements, processes, forms, deadlines, and possible fees will differ between universities, creating complexities for the student to manage.
IU programs formerly awarding Purdue degrees will accept prior approved plans of study, coursework, qualifying or preliminary exams, and committee selection completed under the Purdue requirements in the same degree – as long as the Declaration of Intent is submitted indicating the selection of an IU degree. The declaration must be received before the deadline.
Purdue courses with the 5-digit course number format will receive a new IU-format course number. The only change to these courses is the course number – all other elements of the course remaining the same. There is a “course crosswalk” available online which gives the original Purdue course number and equivalent IU course number to confirm that the new IU course fulfills the approved plan of study.
Students in the special teach-out cohort in a PhD program will be exempt from declaring a minor if they move into the IU degree of their same program. If they were enrolled in a Purdue degree program under the School of Science before July 1, 2024, they are part of the teach-out cohort.
Those admitted to School of Science PhD programs Fall 2024 and after will complete a required minor outside their degree program.
Degree requirements for students choosing Purdue degrees awarded through IU Graduate School Indianapolis will utilize the Purdue systems for plans of study, exam forms, and thesis deposits as we always have under IU Indianapolis. The IU Graduate School will ensure degree requirements are met, and the School of Science recorder will add the degree award in the IU Student Information System. Degree data will be uploaded to the Purdue student information system the following semester. IUI will issue the Purdue diploma for those students.
Starting Fall 2024, students receiving Purdue degrees from IU Indianapolis will no longer be recognized in the IU Indianapolis commencement ceremony. We are told that Purdue will invite those students to commencement ceremonies in West Lafayette along with students graduating from Purdue in Indianapolis. We are not yet sure how students will be included/invited to participate, but we do know that PhD students can invite their major professor to hood them during the ceremony. We believe there will be an online form for students to complete to be included in their commencement. Major Professor names will need to be sent to pugrad@iu.edu well in advance of commencement so they can participate in hooding ceremony.
Tuition and campus fees will be the same for both degrees, but students who select a Purdue degree are subject to the $200 late fee for a variety of issues related to graduation (late plan of study, late candidacy enrollment, enrolling in candidacy courses on the 3rd and subsequent semesters until graduation). Purdue students pay a deposit fee to submit a thesis ($90) or dissertation ($125). Students in IU programs do not pay these extra fees.
IU is providing funds to support the academic, research, and teaching activities of graduate students in School of Science.
School of Science graduate students currently receiving fellowships or academic appointments are funded using dollars from IU or external agencies. This would not change for students choosing a Purdue degree.
IU students in the School of Science will be eligible for all IU and IU Indianapolis awards and fellowships.
Students selecting Purdue for their institution will not qualify for IU awards and fellowships; Purdue University has indicated they may open some of their award competitions to these students.
Either degree selection will need to follow the faculty committee rules of the degree campus, so some administrative work may be needed for committees to meet requirements; however, Purdue has agreed to maintain faculty appointments for plans of study approved by July 1, 2024. With this allowance, students should not have to change their committee chair or co-chair as long as they remain with IU Indianapolis until the student graduates. There will be no required committee changes otherwise unless funding is an issue.
