Why did you choose graduate school at IU Indianapolis?
I chose graduate school at IU Indianapolis because of the strong research opportunities in the School of Science, especially within the Department of Biology. The program's focus on translational and interdisciplinary research aligned well with my interests in neurobiology. I was also drawn to the supportive environment, the chance to collaborate with researchers across different disciplines, and the access to great research facilities that allow me to grow as a scientist and prepare for my future career.
What has been your favorite academic accomplishment since you’ve been here?
One of my favorite academic accomplishments so far has been completing my first preclinical study. It was a great learning experience—from planning and running experiments to analyzing the data. It really helped me grow as a researcher and built my confidence to start working on writing the manuscript, which I’m currently preparing.
What do you enjoy most about life in Indianapolis?
What I enjoy most about life in Indianapolis is the balance it offers—it's a big enough city to have great restaurants, parks, and events, but still affordable and easy to get around. I also really enjoy how welcoming the community is, both on and off campus. There are plenty of quiet spots to recharge, which I appreciate during busy times in grad school.
Please provide some details about your work/research as a graduate student and/or any activities you are involved in.
As a graduate student in the Department of Biology, my research focuses on studying hydrocephalus, a neurological condition involving abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Specifically, I’m working on preclinical studies to investigate potential treatment strategies and understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved. Outside of my research, I’m passionate about science communication and advocacy. I’ve been involved in organizing events to raise awareness and fundraise for hydrocephalus research, including swimming from Alcatraz as part of a charity event. I also enjoy mentoring undergraduate students in the lab and participating in departmental outreach activities.
