Why did you choose graduate school at IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis)?
Going for my master's in Human-Computer Interaction at IU Indianapolis (IUI) was a bit like finding the perfect fit. I applied to another university and got in, but when it came down to choosing, IUI had that extra something.
What really got me excited was the whole research scene – those research labs where students from different backgrounds team up, and that got me hyped. Talking to current students and grads, it felt like I found my academic family. Everyone was raving about the university, and I wanted to be part of that energy.
The professors? Top-notch. They're not just brainy, but also super friendly. I checked out their work, and it blew my mind. They're not just about teaching; they're pushing the boundaries in their fields.
But here's the game-changer – the perks. IUI hooked it up with scholarships, funding, and on-campus part-time jobs. It wasn't just about classes; it was about having the support and resources to make things happen.
Looking back, choosing IUI was the smartest move I've made. The vibe, the teamwork, the top-notch professors, and those extra perks – it's the full deal. Proud to be repping IUI!
What has been your favorite academic accomplishment since you’ve been here?
My favorite academic accomplishment since joining the university has been going beyond my comfort zone from day one. It all began with summoning the courage to reach out to Dr. Davide Bolchini, whose work had captivated me since my application. This initial step led to an enriching journey as a research assistant at the Convergent Media and Technology (CoMeT) lab, where I collaborate with a diverse group of talented individuals and gain invaluable industry exposure. Additionally, I am honored to serve as a UX Research Assistant at the Accessible Computing Lab under Dr. Bolchini's guidance.
Moreover, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute as a Graduate Assistant at the Graduate Mentoring Center, which subsequently paved the way for my role as a Student Academic Appointee (SAA). As an international student, managing college expenses is a challenge, and the SAA position has provided much-needed financial relief.
Finally, I am proud to have used my academic knowledge to excel in competitions like the EduSands Hacks - hackathon, where I was awarded the prestigious "Top 150" accolade out of over 800 participants. These achievements collectively highlight my growth, resilience, and commitment to academic excellence during my time here at the university.
What do you enjoy most about life in Indianapolis?
Life in Indianapolis is simply wonderful. There's so much to love about this city, from the gorgeous canal walk right by my apartment to the stunning sunsets at White River State Park. But if I had to pick one thing that I absolutely adore, it would be the cycling trails. As someone who's passionate about nature and biking, there's nothing quite like the feeling of freedom and adventure that comes with exploring Indianapolis on two wheels. Whether enjoying the scenery or just the good music as I pedal along, cycling or walking through these trails is hands-down my favorite thing to do here.
Please provide some details about your work/research as a graduate student and/or any activities you are involved in.
As a graduate student at IUI, I've got a lot on my plate—and I love every minute of it! At the Accessible Computing Lab, where I work with Dr. Bolchini, we're working on “Aural access to the Blind and visually impaired”. It's been a rewarding journey, and I'm learning a ton every day. Over at the Convergent Media And Technologies (COMET) lab, I'm also lending a hand as a Research Assistant, exploring the AI demonstration projects.
Outside of the lab, I'm big on volunteering. I've been doing some UX Design work with the "Genhouse Project" in the Philippines, trying to make user experiences better. I rarely get time for this but whenever I can, I try to volunteer with End Lung Cancer - an important cause close to my heart.
Within the university community, I am an active member of various organizations. I am proud to be part of DesiJags, a cultural student organization at IUPUI, where I actively contributed to event planning and coordination efforts. And then there's DeCo—the ultimate hangout spot for design and UX enthusiasts. I serve as the secretary and Treasurer for DeCo (Design Coterie), a club dedicated to fostering creativity and innovation in design and UX.
Lastly, through my graduate assistantship, I have collaborated with the Underrepresented Graduate and Professional Student Organization (UPnGO), the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) and Preparing Future Faculty and Professionals (PFFP) on social media and helped them execute collaborative events.
