Carefully review the information here. If it is your intention to apply to a program at a later time, you need to contact that program for their advice on the courses you should take as a Graduate Non-Degree student. If your questions cannot be answered by the information below, contact the Graduate School at 317-274-1577 or iuindy.graduate@iu.edu.
Welcome to the Graduate Non-Degree Program!
You will need your 10-digit university ID number for all university transactions. This number was provided in your admissions email. Please have this number available whenever you call a department or unit on campus as it will expedite requests.
Set up your University Account
Your ten-digit University ID is needed for you to create a university account and obtain a network ID for email. Go to One.IU and type “Create a New Task” in the search bar. The first task shown is “Create My First IU Account”. Click on that and follow the instructions. Once you set-up your account, there is a delay of about 20 minutes before you can register for classes. If you are unable to set up your account, please contact the UITS help desk at (317) 274-HELP.
Register for classes
You will be able to register for classes, once you have created your University Account and Network ID for email. Go to your Student Center to search and register for classes. You can see a different view of the schedule of classes by clicking on the appropriate semester on the Find the Classes website though this does not provide real-time enrollment data. For complete enrollment information and instructions, go to the How to Register page. Any problems you have with registering for a class need to be addressed with the Registrar's office at 317-274-1519 or indyregr@iu.edu. If permission is required to take a course you are interested in, you must seek that permission from the program and/or professor of the class. You should be enrolling in “Graduate Courses Only” or a “Combination of Graduate and Undergraduate Courses”. Any undergraduate courses taken as a GND student are at the graduate student credit hour rate. If you decide either now or at a later time to enroll in “Undergraduate Courses Only,” you should apply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a “Non-Degree Student."
STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARD
Don’t forget to get your CrimsonCard, which is the official photo ID card for all Indiana University campuses that recognizes you as an active student of the campus community. It is used for things like gaining access to buildings, checking out library books, and printing on campus. You can also use your CrimsonCard to make purchases both on and off campus. You can get your card at the CrimsonCard office, located on the 2nd floor of the Campus Center in Room 217. Read more about the CrimsonCard.

Immunization compliance at IU Indianapolis
Immunization Compliance: Every student who will be physically present on an Indiana University campus must provide certain immunization information to the university. The main objective of this provision is to enable the university to provide a safer and healthier environment for students.

You will need your 10-digit university ID number to drop/add courses. Any problems you have with registering for a class need to be addressed with the Registrar's office at 317-274-1519 or indyregr@iu.edu. If permission is required to take a course you are interested in, you must seek that permission from the program and/or professor of the class. Through the first week of the semester (or first 3 days of summer session) you can make changes to your schedule online. After the first week of classes (or first 3 days of summer session), academic advisor and instructor approval is required. In the GND program, your academic advisor is Jennifer Mahoney – mahoney2@iu.edu.
Electronic Class Drop and Add (eDrop & eAdd) have been developed so students are able to make changes to their class schedules without having to walk paper forms to various campus offices for approvals and processing.
- After you submit your electronic eDrop/eAdd requests, academic advisors and others will review and approve (or disapprove, if necessary) those requests using an electronic workflow system.
- Approved drop and/or add requests will then automatically update your class schedule before email notifications are sent to your iupui.edu account indicating the completion of your request.
- Note: Until you receive confirmation that the transaction has been approved and processed, you are not officially added to or dropped from the class. You should attend class while you wait for the approvals and you should prompt your instructor/advisor to approve your electronic request.
- For more details visit the Drop/Add page in Student Central.
- If you have dropped a course, tuition is refunded when applicable by the Office of the Bursar on a percentage basis according to the term refund schedule. Visit the academic calendar for specific term refund schedules. In extenuating cases a student may wish to appeal for a larger refund of fees. Visit Receive Your Refund in Student Central for further details.
- You must achieve at least a 3.0 in all courses if you intend to apply to a graduate program and want those courses to be transferred in should you get accepted.
- You must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 if you do not intend to apply to a graduate program.
- You are not able to take classes on a Pass/Fall option.
- You cannot acquire more than 9 to 12 graduate hours in a school or department. If you plan to apply to a program, be sure to ask the maximum credits they will accept from GND students.
- You cannot acquire more than 18 undergraduate credit hours in a school or department, unless you receive special permission from the department, which must be communicated from the program advisor to the GND coordinator by email.
- You may need departmental approval/permission for certain courses before you can register.
Generally, students enrolled in the GND program are not eligible for financial aid. GND students taking graduate classes as prerequisites to get into a graduate program should review information about financial aid and the Non-Degree Prerequisite Coursework Verification form.
The Non-Degree Prerequisite Verification Form must be completed and then signed by a representative from the graduate program the student wishes to be admitted to before submission to Financial Aid for consideration.
If you took the EAP exam to prove English proficiency for admission, you are strongly encouraged to take any English courses recommended through your testing. You are not required to take these as a Graduate Non-Degree student, but if you are later accepted into a degree-seeking program after taking courses in the Graduate Non-Degree program, you will be required to take these English classes and you will not receive your degree until they are completed. Taking these courses will also help you to be successful in your graduate program. Keep in mind test scores are valid for one year from the test date, so you may have to take the test again if applying to a degree-seeking program after one year.
